The Maya
The Maya

The Hunt for the Mayan Looking-Glass is not necessarily an historical novel. While it will be immediately obvious to most that the Real People that populate this story are the ancient Maya of Mesoamerica, they are more the Maya of my imagination than the people whose ancient cities lend mystery to the forested lowlands of Guatemala, Belize, and southeastern Mexico, and whose written language slowly yields itself to decipherment. And while I have spent years hiking into even the most remote of those sites, I do not refer to them by their modern names Copan, Tikal, Chichen Itza, and the rest; nor do I refer to their builders as the Maya, for that is not how those remarkable people knew themselves. In fact, any resemblance between the characters herein and historical personages would be nothing less than delightful.
